Congratulations on taking a step in the right direction toward mastering Exquisite Self-Care!
The idea of Exquisite Self-Care is something that has many definitions for as many people.
What I found to be interesting during the research for this collection, was that most women go to ‘rest, exercise, eating right and drinking water,’ as the default self-care strategy.
And, while those elements are important, my experience working with professional women around the country tells me, that they are actually the smallest component to the self-care plan.
So then, what is most significant in our plan to master Exquisite Self-Care?
That answer came to me while coaching a team of leaders in a higher education environment. After completing a very large and exhausting plan with for the organization, I asked the members of the team what they would each do to celebrate their big accomplishment. The team was split men and women, and their answers really perplexed me.
- The men had no problem stating what they would do to celebrate. It included things like going fishing, making a purchase, or going to a game with the guys.
- The women on the team didn’t deliver quite so easily. After a long pause, their lists began with other people, projects and tasks that waited at home.
- Each totally missed the idea that they could do something solely for their own pleasure as acknowledgment for a job well done. That they too could delight in an activity that was for rejuvenation and not a task or to serve someone else.
The question then begged to be asked. Why do women struggle with taking good care, exquisite care, of themselves?
